Why should you actually care if you are working out in college? I mean you have time to figure out all that after finals, right? Here are a few interesting facts that might help you decide if this change in lifestyle is something worth your investment.
Increases GPA
There is a connection between the time you workout and your GPA. One hour of exercise a week boosts your score by 0.06 points. That’s every hour. So, if you worked out 1 hour per day 6 days a week, your GPA on average will be 0.36 points higher.
A study done by University of Miami states that “a one-point increase in high school GPA raises annual earnings in adulthood by around 12 percent for men and 14 percent for women.” In case you didn't see that, this is a high school GPA they studied. How much more of a pay raise do you think a college GPA is?
The same study also found that rising your GPA by 1 percent doubles your chances of finishing college. The average college student with a bachelor degree earns $32,000 more than the average student with a high school diploma.
If you are interested in making more money after college,(which is why most of us go to college) one great way is to keep your GPA high. One easy way to boost it is by working out regularly.
Liar Liar Pants on Fire
I do not like liars. I don’t think anyone does. But 25% of college students are lying to themselves. 25% of college students who are not active believe they are active enough to remain healthy. That means 25% of students think they should be less stressed, have a better grade, look better, etc. When the truth is they are just telling themselves that they already have all of that.
Can you imagine how sad that would be, most people do not even realize when they are lying to themselves.
Just a few consequences of lying are:
Less self respect- You do not respect other liars, it is no different with yourself.
Less self awareness- You begin to actually believe yourself which lowers your awareness.
You harden your own desires- You are less likely to believe others when they tell you the truth or present proof.
You become hostile- People tend to become angry when they are presented with something telling them they have to change.
Maybe even worse is that lying becomes a habit. If you begin convincing yourself that you are healthy and active when deep down you know you are not, it will become easier for you to tell similar lies as an adult.
When we decide to tell ourselves the truth, we allow ourselves to change. Which eventually brings peace. Which is why the Bible says, “the truth will set you free.”
Habits Build Over Time
85% of adults keep their workout habits from their senior year in college. This is for those people who believe they will start going to the gym once they are out of college. The chances of that are very small. But if you start now and build great habits you have an 85% chance to keep that up for the rest of your life.
We have talked about major illnesses that college students suffer from, but I want to focus on the long term. If you are in college you probably believe you will keep living another few years. (at least the bank that loaned you all your tuition does)
I often hear “I do not want to grow old”. Each time I hear that I think to myself, “no, you do not want to grow old and be sick, but we all want to grow old”. None of us would mind being like Fauja Singh, the world's oldest marathon runner.
Singh has set multiple world records of marathon, his most recent is finishing a marathon as an 110 year old. He currently inspires young adults and adolescents to live healthier lifestyles by eating healthier and exercising regularly.
“It is only because of him that none of us eat any fast food because he has taught us that such things can slow down the functioning of the body.” Said Avneet Kaur, Granddaughter of Fauja Singh, ”Ever since my childhood, I have listened to him saying that no matter what, one must not skip exercise.”
Now you might not want to run marathons, but you do not want to grow old and sick, you want to be healthy for as long as you live. Begin now.
Conclusion
One of the major goals in college is to prepare us for the rest of our lives. Each college might have slightly different goals as to the kind of adult they want to prepare, but no one can become the best version of themselves without a consistent workout routine.
