5 Benefits of Cardio, Weight Lifting, and Body Weight Exercise
CARDIO
I know, we all hate it, cardio is one of the most mentally challenging parts of working out. I think that is part of the reason why it has some of the greatest benefits.
Benefits
Strong heart: means you will not be as tired
Improve lungs: means you will be able to run longer
Mental Health: means your brain will be healthier and you'll feel better
Reduce risk of diseases: means you will live longer and not get as sick
Better sleep: yes, every night you can sleep deeper and wake up more awake
When I was little, my older brothers and I liked to say, ”I like to pick things up and put them down.” (In an Arnold Schwarzenegger accent, to this day I do not know if he ever said that line) Lifting weights is one of the best ways to tone your body and build muscles if you are a boy or a girl.
Benefits
Build muscle: Bigger arms, more strength, helps you live longer
Heart health: You will not be as tired
Burn body fat: You will get toner, which makes your muscles pop
Strengthen bone and joints: Your bones will be harder to break and your joints will be stronger
Reduce injury risk: You will not get as hurt.
BODY WEIGHT
This one is my bread and butter. I love body weight exercises. I love how you can do them anywhere at any time. I enjoy switching up my workouts to target my muscles differently, plus you can learn to do some really cool moves. They also have some major benefits.
Benefits
Combines cardio and strength: Many of the benefits listed above
Improves balance: You will not fall as much
Improves flexibility: You will be able to touch your toes
Burns fat: Skinnier, muscles pop more, and get more defined
Prevents injury: You will not get hurt as much.
I understand that now you have a difficult choice. You have so many options. They are similar yet at the same time they are all different. How do you pick where to start?
I have known people who feel like they cannot begin until they have the perfect workout routine. They have to warm up, lift weights for an hour, run for 30 minutes, end with some pushups, and if they did not stretch at the end it just was not worth doing at all.
As a college student, you probably do not have that kind of time. As a human, I doubt most of us have the energy to keep a routine like that up long term.
I recommend that you pick whichever will be easiest for you to maintain over the long term. If you have a gym membership and you love going, go ahead and pick up some weights. If you do not feel like leaving your living room, do some pushups. Or if you just have 10 minutes and you want to do something quick, do some HITT cardio and be done.
Do not make your life more complicated than it needs to be.
